Muddy Water Winery - Waipara, New Zealand

2008 Deliverance Red Table Wine

The wine has a deep purple colour with ripe red fruit flavours of plum, tamarillo and dark cherries with a touch of cracked black pepper.

Savoury and dense, this wine shows a good depth with firm, ripe tannins as well as earthy and spicy notes. Enjoyable now, but cellaring will give more texture and harmony.

Serving Suggestions

Pairs well with tuna and red wine sauce, strong game meats such as rabbit and venison, as well as heavily sauced beef dishes or a classic Osso bucco.

Current vintage: 2008

Reviews

"The 2008 vintage is a blend of Pinotage and Syrah, grown at Waipara, which did not meet the winery's standards for varietal wines.  Fullish in colour, with a gamey, earthy, spicy bouquet,  it has plum, herb and spice flavours, not concentrated but smooth, with drink-young appeal.  ***   The 2009 vintage is full-coloured, with a spicy, slightly rustic bouquet.  Mouthfilling and firmly structured, it has plum, spice and dark chocolae flavours, showing very good depth."  ***

Michael Cooper's Buyer's Guide to New Zealand Wines,  2011

"It would be difficult to taste the 2008 Muddy Water Red Table Wine Deliverance Pinotage Syrah, unmasked, with the echoes of banjos in one's mind. The wine's label suggests syrah is the predominant variety but the website suggests otherwise - either way, syrah takes a dominant role in the fruit character with white pepper and spice showing clearly through on the nose and palate. Muddy Water has taken an eminently sensible approach to fruit that wasn't deemed good enouh to grace the main MW label, and has produced a fruit-focused, cheerful red that is appropriately priced. Plus a great name."
