Muddy Water is situated in Waipara, Canterbury, New Zealand.
Muddy Water vineyard and winery has been purchased by Greystone Wines, a neighbouring property to Muddy Water and like Muddy Water, a grower and producer of very special wines.
At the moment it is harvest at both Greystone and Muddy Water, and we all are working hard to produce another quality vintage. Please stay posted for regular updates!
The name Muddy Water is a direct translation from the Maori place name Waipara (Wai – water, Para – mud or sediment).
Muddy Water is a small organic estate with a total area of 36 hectares, 15 hectares are planted in vines. We are on the western slopes of the Teviotdale Hills, a coastal range which protects Waipara from the cool sea breezes.
The vines are planted on calcareous clays soils which gives our wines their distinctive minerality. We grow Pinot Noir, Riesling, Chardonnay and Pinotage.
All vineyard work is done by hand by our small team of workers. Our grapes are hand-harvested and hand sorted to ensure quality. Muddy Water's organic philosophy carries on from the vineyard into the winery where the wines are made using native yeasts and as little intervention as possible.
Our aim is quality, integrity and true sustainability.
Muddy Water is part of Greening Waipara initiative, which aims to restore native flora and fauna to enhance the Biodiversity of the Waipara valley.
